U.S. Tightens Visa and Travel Rules for Ugandan Applicants
Ugandans planning to travel to the United States for business or tourism are facing stricter visa requirements following recent policy changes introduced by the United States Department of State.
$15,000 Visa Bond Introduced
Effective January 21, 2026, some Ugandan applicants for B1/B2 business and tourist visas may be required to pay a refundable visa bond of up to US$15,000 (approximately UGX 54 million) before their visas are issued.
The measure is part of a pilot program targeting countries with higher visa overstay rates. During the visa interview process, consular officers determine the bond amount—typically $5,000, $10,000, or $15,000. The bond is refunded if the traveler complies with visa conditions and departs the United States within the authorized period of stay.
Shorter Visa Validity
In addition, since July 2025, most B1/B2 visas issued to Ugandan citizens have been limited to single-entry visas valid for only three months. This means travelers can enter the United States once within that validity period and must reapply for a new visa for future trips.
What This Means for Travelers
The new measures significantly tighten conditions for short-term travel to the United States from Uganda. While the visa bond is refundable, the policy increases the financial requirements for applicants and is intended to encourage compliance with U.S. immigration rules and reduce visa overstays.
